Billy Claven, “one arm and one leg crippled”, lives on the Aran island of Inishmaan with his adoptive aunties, Kate and Eileen. His life is spent shuffling back and forth to the doctor, and reading the same books over and over just for something to do.

When Billy hears of an American film crew on Inishmore making a documentary about life in the Aran islands, he becomes desperate to land a part in the film. Through a bit of scheming, Billy secures passage to Inishmore, with the intent of auditioning.

Much to the surprise of everyone on the island, Billy is granted a screen test for a film and heads off to Hollywood, but the experience isn’t quite what he expected …

Part of the Michael Grandage Season, Martin McDonagh’s darkly comedic and critically acclaimed The Cripple of Inishmaan opened in previews at the Noel Coward Theatre on 8th June 2013, and played for a twelve week run.
