Dan wins Empire Hero Award

Jameson Empire Awards 2013 - Press Room

Dan attended the 2013 Jameson Empire  Awards, where he was presented with the Hero award, which was presented to him by The Woman in Black director James Watkins.  The Woman in Black won the award for Best Horror.

Empire’s online report of Dan accepting the Hero award is below.

James Watkins, who we saw just a while ago accepting his own award for The Woman In Black, is back onstage to present the Empire Hero award, which recognises someone who we just think is generally pretty ace. Watkins says, “He deserves it for being utterly fearless” for taking the most scrutinised piece of casting of our time in Harry Potter and then delivering over a decade and ten films; tackling the West End stage, “balls out, literally” at 17 in Equus, and doing 345 straight performances on Broadway singing and dancing. “This desire to take risks is why I cast him in Woman In Black,” explains Watkins.

Yes, this year’s recipient is DANIEL RADCLIFFE, who left the Boy Who Lived behind and has already shown some serious range to his work, inbetween bouncing with that insane energy he has. “It’s always embarrassing to see myself, and thanks for the awws at the beginning. Empire’s always been unpatronising of Potter and myself, so thanks for that.” He thanks the directors who are willing to take a chance on him and see him as something other than Potter, and is generally, as ever, charming and friendly. Some day he’s going to kick a puppy, and we’re going to be there to see it, dagnabbit.

A video of Dan accepting his award is available here.

After walking the red carpet, Dan spoke to Empire about his upcoming films and his casting in Frankenstein, discussing what drew him to the role.

Dan talks to The Independent about The Cripple of Inishmaan, Horns, and The F Word

cripple

Dan recently spoke to Jill Lawless of The Independent about his upcoming play, and his films The F Word and Horns.

Speaking about Cripple and the play’s writer, Martin McDonagh, Dan said, ”He walks that line between tragedy and comedy so brilliantly. I think one of the hilarious things about this play is, by our standards today, how politically incorrect it is.”

Dan is currently writing a screenplay, and told Lawless that, “it’s just so dark, and I think it’s funny, but I’m not sure if anybody else ever would. I aspire to be a poor man’s Martin McDonagh.”

Dan says that his romantic comedy The F Word  is  “very funny, very sweet but also very smart,” and that whilst he doesn’t want to say he’s playing himself, he does play a character that’s a “fairly high-anxiety, slight hyperactive guy.”

He describes Horns as ”a love story, it’s a revenge movie, it’s a horror movie in parts — it’s going to be crazy.”
