Dan talks to The Independent about The Cripple of Inishmaan, Horns, and The F Word

cripple

Dan recently spoke to Jill Lawless of The Independent about his upcoming play, and his films The F Word and Horns.

Speaking about Cripple and the play’s writer, Martin McDonagh, Dan said, ”He walks that line between tragedy and comedy so brilliantly. I think one of the hilarious things about this play is, by our standards today, how politically incorrect it is.”

Dan is currently writing a screenplay, and told Lawless that, “it’s just so dark, and I think it’s funny, but I’m not sure if anybody else ever would. I aspire to be a poor man’s Martin McDonagh.”

Dan says that his romantic comedy The F Word  is  “very funny, very sweet but also very smart,” and that whilst he doesn’t want to say he’s playing himself, he does play a character that’s a “fairly high-anxiety, slight hyperactive guy.”

He describes Horns as ”a love story, it’s a revenge movie, it’s a horror movie in parts — it’s going to be crazy.”

Dan in Talks to Play Lead Role in Frankenstein

dan

After months of rumours, it was announced today that Dan is in final talks for the lead role in Frankenstein for 20th Century Fox. Directed by Paul McGuigan, with a script by Max Landis, the film is “a tale of friendship and redemption”.

Igor (aka Hunchback) is described asDirty and pathologically so. He wears old clown clothes, faded. His slouched posture and long hair is offset by his intelligent eyes.

During a panel at Comikaze 2012, Landis said “Instead of making the accurate version, what if I write a version that everyone already thinks exists. And I do the best cool version of it. Igor is the main character. Hey guys, Igor may be Daniel Radcliffe.”

Frankenstein is set to begin filming once Dan has finished his West End run in The Cripple of Inishmaan.

ETA: Thanks to Titch, who found this interview with Max Landis which sheds a little more light on the film.

That’s when the idea came to me: instead of trying to do some high minded “revisionist” Frankenstein, why not try to stay true to a version that only lives in the zeitgeist, and has NEVER REALLY EXISTED.

And why not do it in an intelligent, hopefully, thoughtful way, about friendship and science, genius and madness, love and ambition, life and death?

Why not use that imaginary, fairy dust framework of “guy with hunchbacked assistant makes monster” and make it fun, sad, scary and hopefully, I really hope this, moving.
