Dan is a Serious Stage Talent, According to Richard Griffiths

In the Media - Online Articles

There is a thrilling new article about the training of the dancers who play the horses in Equus on newsday.com's website and, along with the promise of an even more spectacular sequence at the end of the play, there is a great quote from Richard Griffiths about Daniel Radcliffe:

"As in London, Radcliffe will be packing in audiences pitched to see Harry Potter in a full-frontal nude scene. From all accounts, they will also see a serious stage talent. After the opening, co-star Richard Griffiths - the Tony Award-winning professor in "The History Boys" and Harry's Uncle Vernon Dursley - said Radcliffe has "an old head on his young shoulders. He has to be regarded in a new way because he is a proper actor."

Many thanks to Star and Jeannine from GRA for the tip!

To all commentors of this page, answer this question: Despite the fact that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince has been postponed to next summer, do you still want to see it? Do you still want it to be a blockbuster like the other five? Do you still want to wait on line near the ticket stand and snack bar, sit on your seats from beginning to end and run out of the autotorium crying after seeing Dumbledore die? I am dreading to hear all Harry Potter fans answer this question so please please PLEASE answer it!
Jeannine   |Registered |2008-08-25 12:47:05
Yes
Yes,and far beyond----
for Dan's sake,as well as all the cast and crew who worked so hard on it
Yes
and I will not be running crying,
I'll probubly be very happy for having seen a good film.
And I don't want to see HBP just
because it is Harry Potter ,I
want to watch Dan.
But right now I have the very
best of wishes for Dan to have
a run in this play that he is hoping
for,and everything he is longing for it to be.

Did they have on stage seating in London?
Star   |68.224.186.25 |2008-08-25 09:41:00
Yes, Darlene, there was onstage seating in London.
Darlene   |167.206.187.242 |2008-08-25 09:58:46
Thanks, Star.
Darlene   |167.206.187.242 |2008-08-25 10:26:47
Sorry, Star, but I have one more question. Is the on stage audience incorporated into the play or are they just there?

Thanks
danilo  - watching from above...   |Registered |2008-08-25 13:13:41
If the stage seating is similar to what was done in London, then one would be watching from behind AND from up high. They are not eye-level to the action.
josc   |Registered |2008-08-25 11:42:21
I know starrr this good
jain   |78.145.55.89 |2008-08-25 12:58:35
no, the people are not involved, and remember the 'action ' plays mainly to the front of the theatre. So, for the majority of the time, you'll be seeing the back of Dan. Personaly i would invest in seats at the front of house.

Didn't his friend Will also call him "an old man in a young person's husk" Seems so true in so many ways.
Julie   |79.68.182.220 |2008-08-25 06:47:52
I still think Dan has a long way to go as actor but Equus was definiately the best I've seen him perform.

I can see him being more of a stage actor after HP.
Anonymous   |85.100.239.10 |2008-08-25 00:05:37
thanks for news.

do you hear.daniel was apparently dining with director Brian Depalma.i hope its true.because depalma very important director.

Say, did anyone read the latest issue of Vogue?
I want to see Equus so badly. I was in London when it had its first run, but I wasn't able to see it. I live in Los Angeles and I can't travel to New York.

Such a wonderful article...the descriptions...and how they went to see what real horses are like...the feel of them to inspire them...amazing!... and Richard...well I just want to hug him!...fantastic!
Julie   |79.67.211.101 |2008-08-23 08:18:25
Strawberrywoman, you saw Equus in London? It was astonishing wasn't it. The horses were just mesmorising weren't they? So cleverly done, you completely forgot there were men under there!

How they're going to top London, I don't know. Makes me want to fly over and see the play again and I've never flown in a plane in my life!!
This is making me mega excited again.

I wish Dan, Richard and ALL the cast the best of luck, everyone should be amazed by this play, it's gonna be money worth spending.
strawberrywoman   |Registered |2008-08-23 08:58:29
Yep I saw Equus in London last year. I went in the begining of May,(had a an amazing time in London by the way).

It was completely astonishing! You really did forget there were men under those wire horse heads. Their movements were so graceful and beautiful, yet very powerful.

It will be very exciting how they are going to top it, because I don't know how
they are going to do it! They
were already amazing, so now they want to be better than amazing!!?!

Great Article. Now maybe people will see him for who he is, instead of his body parts.
Mafusea  - dyspraxia   |89.28.114.64 |2008-08-23 05:12:25
did anybody know that DAn got dyspraxia ??
or is it just a rumour?
jain   |89.240.115.218 |2008-08-23 05:17:58
yes he has a very very very very very mild form. He also said he regreted revealing it as some people over-reacted to the news. So perhaps out of respect to dan, we can now file this information to the back of our collective memories!
shania   |85.49.207.55 |2008-08-23 07:03:35
Well, I'm happy he said it, because it will help many kids and adults who also suffer it and are afraid to talk about it. I'm sure it will make a lot of people
feel more comfortable about it, knowing it's something famous people suffer too and don't mind to openly talk about it. It's nothing to feel ashamed of, all the contrary, it makes me admire Dan even more, I guess he has had to work even harder to make his dreams come true.
It's also a way to support all those organizations that work very hard to make the world aware of these problems and get more help to everyone. So maybe if Dan will see it in this way, he won't regret it. It was very brave of him, it's not his fault that sensacionalist media just like to distory stories and exaggerate to sell more.
Marie   |82.2.201.222 |2008-08-24 02:24:50
Yes I agree. I know Dan has a mild case but still, I think it just shows even more how much Dan has achieved and is prepared to achieve. Some things he must have had to really work hard at, like the physical stunts in HP. But that is topped by the amazing choreographed and athletic sequence at the end of Equus, which took my breath away and is still etched in my mind. And considering that he said he was rubbish at everything at school, he still managed to get all A's in his AS levels. HP gave him the confidence to do that for sure. It's sad that his exclusive Prep school didn't though (his ex prep school is one of the feeder school for the top Public Schools like Eton).
kibbles22   |216.183.185.22 |2008-08-23 08:43:36
yes i believe that is a good idea!
kibbles22  - i believe so?   |216.183.185.22 |2008-08-23 08:04:35
i believe that he does have it but they said it is not that bad. i mean they would not lie about dan having dyspraxia in Vouge now would they?

Richard always has a good word to say about Dan--and of course he deserves it.yes,he does have an old head on young shoulders,no doubt about it.the way he has handled everything--career,studies,fame...it's amazing and inspiring.
strawberrywoman   |Registered |2008-08-22 21:01:02
Lovely, lovely article!

The horses blew me away in London and Will was just incredible, so the fact they are going to top that is amazing!
I mean these dancers did things I have never seen dancers do, it was stunning and beautiful.

I can't wait to see Equus again and I can't wait to see Dan's performance.
He was completely brilliant in London so I am very excited to see what he will bring to the New York stage.
danilo   |Registered |2008-08-22 19:05:11
Oooh! Loved that article.

I've spent my share of time in stables: grooming, picking hooves clean, saddling up, getting bitten trying to get the bit into a horse's mouth... hee hee. (Must say, I love riding, but I don't agree with Shaffer and the common belief that riding is sexy - not while you're busy riding! If it looks sexier than it actually is, that is totally an illusion.)

Anyway, if the troupe wanted to see what a dangerous horse is like, all they'd have to do is arrange to see a corralled stallion when there's a mare in heat nearby. The male goes completely out of its mind, and is freakishly scary.
