When Harry returns for his sixth year at Hogwarts, the war is still raging between the magical community and the forces of Lord Voldemort.  Harry embarks on a series of private lessons from Dumbledore, who shows Harry glimpses into Lord Voldemort's past and clues to how to bring about his downfall.  Meanwhile, Harry becomes a star student at Potions, thanks not only to a new teacher but also to the discovery of a textbook that belonged to the "Half-Blood Prince", containing a series of notes and spells.  Who is the mysterious Prince?  But treachery is afoot at Hogwarts, students are attacked, secret deals are forged, and a chain of events is set in motion that will ultimately lead to tragedy and set the stage for the final chapter in the Harry Potter series.
