Several children had to be plucked to safety at a red carpet film opening in Melbourne on Sunday as fans surged to get a glimpse of Daniel Radcliffe, the British star of the Harry Potter films.

Radcliffe was at Rivoli Cinemas in Camberwell, in Melbourne’s east, to promote the Australian film December Boys, his first non-Potter film.

Hundreds of screaming teenage girls and a small of number of boys lined the red carpet for up to seven hours to catch a glimpse of the teen star.

But it became too much for some, and several children had to be rescued from the crush by security guards.

One girl passed out from exhaustion before Radcliffe arrived.

Another yelled: “I love you, Daniel” as he signed autographs for fans.

Security guards struggled to contain the mob, as they tried to push over the crowd barriers and stream into the cinema foyer, where Radcliffe was speaking to the media.

The star appeared shocked by the attention.

“Oh my God. Yes, it’s a little bit overwhelming,” he told AAP.

Asked if he was expecting the turnout, he said: “No, to be honest, I wasn’t.

“This is big. This is bigger than I imagined it was going to be, so it’s kind of incredible for me.”

Radcliffe played one of four orphan boys competing to be adopted in the coming-of-age drama set in South Australia.

He said he chose to work on December Boys as a challenge to himself.

“It wasn’t necessarily that I had my mind set on absolutely, definitely doing an Australian movie, but it was just about doing something different, doing something that maybe wasn’t a blockbuster and doing something that was going to challenge me in a new way,” he said.

“Any pressure that I feel (to prove he could do something other than Harry Potter) has been put on me by myself, to be honest.”

Director Rod Hardy said securing Radcliffe to star in the movie was unexpected.

“I think the planets lined up … it was the right time, they (Radcliffe’s management) were looking for something, along came our script and it really was a well written, a beautifully written script, so it all just fitted in.”

December Boys opens around Australia on September 20.
