Latest Dan News Roundup

Posted by coralie on 29/11/07

We have a few news worthy Dan items to share with you this morning, all courtesy of Radcakesfan:

TVO, which is a publicly-funded channel available to Ontario (Canada) residents on cable, will be broadcasting My Boy Jack Sunday January 20, 2008, at 9 pm. If you click on this link and scroll down the page, you will be able to see yet another short video clip from the movie.

There is a very touching article in the Daily Mail about an exhibit of sick children’s artwork opening in London next Tuesday, with some of the pieces to be auctioned off to raise funds for various hospices. Dan is one of the stars backing the exhibition, picking out a Hogwarts themed drawing made by an eight-year-old boy confined to a wheelchair after suffering a congenital viral infection.

quote:

"I am so impressed by Sam’s picture. He has done a fantastic job of recreating the magical atmosphere of the Harry Potter films he loves."

The exhibition is being held at the Bankside Gallery in London through December 9, with the proceeds from the private auction to be divided between twenty-eight children’s hospices.

And there is an interview in the Daily Mail with thirteen-year-old Dakota Blue Richards, who plays the part of Lyra in The Golden Compass, in which the budding actress says that she received some sound career advice from both Daniel and Emma.

quote:

"They were about the same age as me when they first started making the Harry Potter films,” she says. “And meeting them helped a lot. They gave me some good tips, especially Daniel. He said, “Know who your friends are – and listen to your mum.”

And he said, “Whenever you feel that maybe you are feeling a bit weird and different, ask somebody who will tell you the truth – keep people around you who you know will be honest.”

“I think that’s very good advice. Emma [Watson], who plays Hermione, was really nice as well – we had a bit of girl bonding."

Join Us this Holiday Season…

Posted by jenna on 28/11/07

It’s that time of year again – the time for giving more, caring more and joining together for a good cause. This year’s Candle for Care fund-raiser is no different. Join us by contributing to Demelza Children’s Hospice this year on Dan’s behalf and give a great gift to those who need it!

This year is a little different as we have teamed up with both Sony and Warner Bros. UK to add an extra bonus to our fund-raising efforts. Both will be donating DVDs, etc. to help increase Demelza’s entertainment library collection.

Another added bonus this year – Dan Fans United for Demelza – a team of Dan sites are working together to help spread the word about Demelza to all of the fans in a joint effort. These sites include: DanRadcliffe.de, Dan-Radcliffe.net, and DRNC-17 Forum. Together we will pool our efforts and make this a great year!

Of course, all those who donate and e-mail their world pay receipt to Jenna will have the opportunity to send in a Christmas wish to Dan, which will in turn be published in a professionally bound book for him over the holidays courtesy of Demelza Children’s Hospice.

That’s not all however, not only do you get to send your seasonal wish to Daniel, you will also be entered into our drawing for a copy of the Order of the Phoenix DVD and a December Boys theatrical poster!

You can be certain that your donation, whatever its size, will make a difference:

• Just £1 could pay for a child’s oxygen mask

• A little more than £5 could pay for a 10min? telephone conversation at 3am with a parent who ‘just wants to talk’ and it costs £10 for the time it takes to change a drip

• £25 could pay for a music therapy session for one child or £100 for an evening’s respite care

To find out more about donating, visit our How You Can Help page. If you already know what to do – go DONATE NOW!!! Don’t forget to select Daniel Radcliffe as your source!

On another note, we will not be doing the 25 days of Christmas this year as we are all so pressed for time right now, however, do not despair, as we will have something very exciting happening on Christmas day – and we will have some great goodies for you on that day as well!! The biggest difference – you get them all at once. toung.gif

Daniel Prefers Darker Side of Harry Potter

Posted by coralie on 25/11/07

With all the media events surrounding the launch of the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD, two new articles have surfaced in which Dan, Rupert and Emma figure prominently and speak about their lives within the Harry Potter film franchise and the two last movies in the series:

quote:

"We’ve got a long haul ahead of us!” the charming yet eternally serious Radcliffe says when Sun Media wishes him luck on the current shoot. When I mention that “everyone’s delighted” to have a tonal shift from the brooding atmosphere of The Order of the Phoenix, Radcliffe smiles and says:

“Everyone’s ‘not’ delighted to be on this!” He is referring to himself.

“I think the script’s great and I think it’s going to be a really great film. But I’m just one of those people that, in what I’m doing, I always lean toward the dark side and I really enjoy doing the dark stuff."

Equus V&A Theatre Archives Report

Posted by jenna on 19/11/07

Staffer Lauren took a trip over to the V&A Theatre Archives to check out the Equus recording. She has written up a report so fans and visitors know what to expect when they visit. You can read her report by clicking the Full Story link below.

quote:

"The opening scene in each act, and a couple of other scenes – the worship and the cinema – were far too dark to work out what was happening, if you hadn’t seen it blankety-twelve times, but the camera work on everything else was superb.

The side-view cameras zoomed, panned and focused on the faces when two characters were talking across the stage to each other. The front view covered the whole scene when “stuff” was happening right across the stage."

New Statesman Article on My Boy Jack and Video Interview with Dan

Posted by jenna on 15/11/07

BBC News has a small video snippet containing interviews with the trio for the OOTP’s ongoing DVD release celebration. Daniel talks about, well, nothing new…Dumbledore being gay, being part of the HP “franchise”, etc. Please click on the link under “Video and Audio News” to view the clip.

Also, reader radcakesfan (cheers!) tells us the New Statesman has published an article today regarding My Boy Jack stating…

quote:

"Daniel Radcliffe’s similarity to the one solemn, bumfluff-moustached portrait of John Kipling I’ve seen. If the role hadn’t required him to wear wire-rimmed specs and an expression of saintly forbearance, I wouldn’t have thought of Harry Potter once. Heartbreakingly, in the trench scenes he looked like a child dressed as a man, too slight and too sweet to lead men to their deaths."

At the risk of getting smacked…Awwwwww.

The Daily Record also posted up a favorable article about My Boy Jack today as well.

Remembrance Day and My Boy Jack

Posted by coralie on 11/11/07

Today is Remembrance Day, and there is an article by Sylvia Patterson in the Sunday Herald that speaks of war, the Imperial War Museum London and the recent press junket for My Boy Jack that was held at the museum. Many thanks to Radcakesfan for the link!

The Times online has also posted a very interesting article revealing the content of actual letters exchanged between Rudyard and John Kipling. This is a strangely intimate look into the lives of the family, almost like reading over someone’s shoulder. You will find the article HERE.

And while we are on the subject of war, which is still as much a reality today as it was back when young Jack Kipling was felled, here are a few lines from The Fallen by Laurence Binyon… A poignant reminder indeed that soldiers, sadly, don’t always come home:

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

More Praise for Dan in MBJ

Posted by coralie on 11/11/07

And here now is more praise for Dan’s performance in My Boy Jack, this time from The Scotsman‘s Andrea Mullaney:

quote:

"I haven’t mentioned so far what will be the biggest draw of My Boy Jack for most – that Daniel Radcliffe plays the son in his first TV role since appearing in the highest grossing movie series of all time. It’s tempting to bill it as Harry Potter and the Trenches of Death (especially as Jack Kipling wears little round glasses), but unfair: Radcliffe’s involvement may have helped to get the film a primetime slot, but he gives an excellent performance as a young man struggling in his father’s shadow until, ironically, being sent to command troops in France. Radcliffe’s many young fans may freak out at the sight of him smoking, drinking and wearing a dodgy moustache, but it may also bring them to an understanding of the First World War in a way school lessons never could."

You will find another in depth and thought provoking interview with Dan on the subject of My Boy Jack here: icWales.co.uk

quote:

"I thought of myself or any of my friends going to war now, and it’s a horrifying thing to contemplate"

I can’t wait to hear about the film from those who will be lucky enough to see it tomorrow. I hope that a lot of UK readers will take a moment to share their thoughts with us!

Another Insightful Interview With Dan

Posted by coralie on 10/11/07

Many thanks to newleaf31 for sending in a link to yet another insightful new interview with Daniel posted on the Telegraph’s website:

quote:

"History can sometimes feel like a list of facts. It becomes interesting to me when you can envisage what an individual might have been thinking at the time of a momentous event. The First World War is one of the most grotesque things to have happened to the human race, but the one thing you can take from it is that it tells us something about human beings’ capacity for survival and the desire to live."

Review of MBJ, Praise for Dan

Posted by coralie on 09/11/07

There is a brief review of My Boy Jack posted on the Telegraph‘s website, and the critic (James Walton) had this to say about Daniel’s performance:

quote:

"Happily, Radcliffe’s presence never felt like merely a ploy to increase the ratings – although presumably it won’t have done them any harm. For a start, casting a real teenager served as a constantly jolting reminder of just how young First World War soldiers were. (When he sailed for France, Jack still wasn’t 18 – and so needed a letter of permission from his dad.) One minute, we saw a boy having a sneaky fag with his sister and moaning about his parents. The next, he was commanding a platoon of 20 Dubliners, most of them older and far more worldly than he was. And through all of this, Radcliffe created an entirely convincing sense of a young man trying unconvincingly not to be scared – and doing his unconvincing best to impersonate a grown-up."

Interview Preview with Daniel Radcliffe and Parkinson

Posted by jenna on 03/11/07

Digital Spy has a few interview snippets from Dan’s bit with Parkinson airing later tonight on ITV1.

quote:

"Asked by Parkinson how Michael had reacted to the news (Dumbledore being gay), Radcliffe replied: “He’s been camping it up around the set like nobody’s business!

“Not in the film, though we did actually film a scene the other day, and I would like emphasise at this point that the script was written before this revelation and I don’t think Steve Kloves had any prior knowledge, but there was a scene the other day when Michael had to come in and tell another character how much he loved knitting patterns! Which he just adored saying that.”"

Daniel Radcliffe Interview at ITV

Posted by jenna on 02/11/07

There is an interview with Daniel on the ITV website about his role in My Boy Jack. He talks about the film, what it was like to film it and why he choose the role.

quote:

"How did you film the battle scenes?
We’d all be sitting there in the rain and mud, chatting to each other before a take and then we’d get up and dash through explosions, which were going off on all sides of us. There were markers dotted across this battlefield where the explosions were and then we’d start filming and they’d take them away and start the rain machines, so our vision would be reduced by about 70 per cent."

Thanks very much to Tracey for the tip!!
