Exclusive: Daniel Radcliffe to play Alan Strang in Equus
Posted by jenna on 28/07/06
There have been many rumours circulating about Dan's involvement in the upcoming production of Equus. Although Dan originally did not accept the role due to timing constraints, I am incredibly over-the-top to finally confirm that Dan will indeed be playing the role of Alan Strang in this play after all. Dan sent this message to me for our readers:
“I'm really excited to be part of this production and thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed.
Rehearsal starts in January and I am very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharock who is an incredibly talented director. I only hope I do the role justice.”
Peter Shaffer's Equus first premiered in 1973 in London, England and won a multitude of awards. Equus focuses on the relationship between seventeen-year-old Alan Strang (Radcliffe), who has blinded six horses with a spike, and Martin Dysart (Griffiths), a middle-aged psychiatrist who tries to figure out what drove Strang to commit the crime.
Shaffer based the plot on an allegedly true story told by a friend about a young man who blinded a stable of horses. The play itself is quite complex, interwoven with symbolism, underlying truth and meaning, passion and madness. It is not suitable for a younger crowd.
Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon in the HP series) will be playing the part of the psychiatrist, Martin Dysart. Thea Sharock will be directing the production with rehearsals beginning in January 2007.
I know there is much speculation about the possible “nudity” involved in some of the scenes, but there have been various renditions of this production without nudity as well. None of that has been determined as yet. This is a production of great emotional and psychological magnitude, it's not about nudity (and contrary to uneducated reports, the entire role is not in the nude!!!!). There are of course graphic sequences within the plot, but again, remember, it is not real – it will be acted. PLEASE – do not go nuts in the comments about it – explicit comments will be deleted.
Tickets for this production are NOT available as the theatre has not yet been selected. Once a theatre has been selected we will announce it on the site. The play is set to open some time in Spring 2007, perhaps with previews as soon as mid-February, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Daniel participates in the first Peterborough Children's Film Awards
Posted by jenna on 26/07/06
There were more than 1,000 primary school pupils, teachers, parents and guests who attended a special ceremony at Peterborough's Broadway Theatre. A total of 208 short films were entered into the competition and awards were made in 10 different categories.
Daniel Radcliffe was among those who presented awards during the ceremony, only he announced the winner of the Mystery and Adventure category via pre-recorded video.
You can listen to his presentation of the award by clicking on THIS LINK. You will need to click on “The nominations are (part 2)” link and then scroll down to the bottom of that page.
Please be patient as it takes time to load, and reload… and then buffer some more. The page does say you can view a video, but the only links available are audio at present. If that changes I will update this news post about it.
On an admin note, I should have the birthday projects for Dan online by tomorrow at the latest. Unfortunately, my computer's hard drive decided to take a nice little vacation Saturday night so I have had to redo everything.

Dan and David Yates in OOTP Clip at Comic-Con
Posted by allo on 22/07/06
As reported earlier, Dan and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director David Yates appeared in a short video clip at the Comic-Con International convention yesterday (Friday), as part of the Warner Bros. Pictures studio presentation.
Dan and David talked briefly about some of the things that they are filming in OOTP. Here's a quick report about their clip, courtesy of Comic Book Resources:
"Harry Potter made an appearance after this…sort of. A quick video clip of Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry) speaking from the set of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” was shown. For fans who are interested, his hair appears to be the shortest it’s ever been for this film. Daniel said the movie is going great, and said that he was sure audiences were curious about the kiss Harry Potter receives in the movie. He then went on to say, “Well, the kiss is…”
Unfortunately, the director, David Yates, then appeared and started talking about the movie as well. He mentioned that Hagrid’s giant brother Grawp will be in the film, as well as Dolores Umbridge, whom the director described as “a cross between Doris Day and Freddy Krueger.”
Yates then addressed the issue of the kiss of the kiss as well, saying “Oh, the kiss? It’s…” A production assistant interrupted and said they were both needed on the set. They quickly said goodbye and left, smiling as they left the audience wondering about that darn kiss. "
Dan Talks About Evanna Lynch
Posted by allo on 21/07/06
Thanks very much to Lauren for sending over a video clip of yesterday's CBBC Newsround interview with Evanna Lynch, who will portray Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Some of Evanna's new castmates were interviewed and this is what Dan had to say about the new Luna:
"Evanna is lovely. Evanna is sort of… not a million miles away from Luna herself!"
The full interview with Evanna is now up at the CBBC Newsround website. One of the things Evanna talks about is her screen test with Dan:
"The screen test I thought went OK and it was really fine because Daniel was really easy to be with because he's very good at acting so you just believe he's Harry and he talked to me a lot. And he was nice. "

Demelza Drive Reminder, and Comments from Dan
Posted by allo on 13/07/06
We'd like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who has contributed to this year's birthday projects for Dan! All fan projects are now CLOSED but there is still one thing you can do to mark Dan's birthday and that is to make a donation to his favorite charity. As we mentioned in the previous post, Dan's June 2006 newsletter makes a special plea for Demelza House. This is the one part of the newsletter that we will reproduce verbatim because it contains an important message:
"As many of you know, my birthday wish as indicated on the danradcliffe.com and danradcliffe.co.uk websites is that instead of fans sending me a gift (which I do appreciate) they may like to make a donation to Demelza House, the children's hospice I have supported for several years. It really does make a difference to this special place. I am aware that some people like to do both – please don't – it makes me feel bad that you are spending money on me when it could be going to a much worthier place – or treat yourself! It is also impossible for me to acknowledge individual gifts now, due to the sheer volume of fanmail. I do hope you understand."
You can make a donation and send a birthday greeting to Dan in the process as part of our Demelza Drive 2006. Please make sure you send your donation receipts and birthday messages to Jenna before July 23rd. Thank you all for your generosity!
June 2006 Newsletter From Dan
Posted by Dee on 13/07/06
We’ve just received a copy of Dan’s latest newsletter, dated June 2006, today and it is filled with all types of information about his recent activities and current interests. We’re not going to reprint it word for word here – we don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone else who might be waiting for their own personal copy – but here are a few snippets of information about what he’s been doing recently.
THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Graham Greene and ROBINSON CRUSOE by Daniel Defoe are just a couple of the books he has read recently. Dan has also “…discovered Regina Spektor…” and “…loved WATERLOO by Dirty Pretty Things” on the music front. Other topics mentioned include plays he has attended in London, his recent exams, post-production work on December Boys, filming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and a plea for donations to Demelza House instead of sending him birthday presents (there will be more details about this in the next post).
If you are wondering how you can get all this information, then write to him at one of the addresses listed our Mailing Address page.
Now that the new newsletter is out, we’ve uploaded a copy of his previous newsletter (received in April) to our Newsletters Gallery.

Posted by allo on 12/07/06
Comedian Ricky Gervais has now announced, in a podcast on his official website, that series 2 of the sitcom Extras will begin on Thursday September 14th at 10:00pm on BBC2 in the UK. HP actor Warwick Davis mentioned earlier that he and Dan guest star in the third episode of the six-part series, which suggests that their episode will probably air on September 28th. Just bear in mind that this is not yet confirmed – as soon as we get a confirmed date, we will post it here and on our TV/Events Calendar. No release date has been announced for the series on HBO in the US yet.
Gervais recommends that you check the Extras page on his official website and subscribe to his podcasts for further updates about the series. Warwick Davis Talks About Filming "Extras" With Dan
Posted by allo on 07/07/06
Back in November, we reported that Dan had been invited to appear in an episode of the second series of Extras, the hit comedy starring Ricky Gervais that appears on BBC and HBO. A report has just appeared on the official website of Warwick Davis, who plays Prof. Flitwick in the Harry Potter films, saying that he has just finished filming that episode with Dan:
"I have just finished a fun three days of filming on the set of Ricky Gervais' comedy 'Extras'.
In episode three, I play myself, albeit an overly exaggerated version. The episode also features 'Harry Potter' actor, Daniel Radcliffe. Both Daniel and I show a very different side of our true characters!"
Several press reports have suggested that Dan's character will be “a bit of a yob”. No airdate has been announced yet for the episode but as soon as we hear news, we'll let you know. Thanks to Veritaserum for the tip!
